How to Reverse Audio on iPhone: Recordings and Voice Memos

Record and reverse your voice on iPhone, or open a short Voice Memo in the free browser tool. Compare the web workflow with the SingBack app.

To reverse audio on iPhone, record a short phrase in SingBack, stop recording and play the backwards version. Use the app's sharing controls when you want to save or send the reversed sound. You can also preview a short recording or existing file in our browser audio tool.

Record and reverse your voice in SingBack

  1. Download SingBack for iPhone and open it.
  2. Allow microphone access, then tap Start Recording.
  3. Say a short phrase or sing a few seconds. Tap Stop Recording and wait for the reversed version.
  4. Compare Play Recorded with Play Reverse.
  5. Use Share Reverse to save or send your reversed audio through a compatible destination on your phone.

Start with a greeting or your name. A few seconds are easier to remember than a full verse. Reversing audio does not remove room noise, so make the original take as clear as you can.

Practice with speed and looping

In Settings, playback speed ranges from 0.5× to 2×. Turn on Loop to hear a phrase repeatedly while you learn its backwards sounds. iOS also has pitch-correction settings for speed changes.

A new recording replaces the current take. Use Share Reverse before starting again if you want to keep the reversed reference outside the app. SingBack does not include a recording library or an importer for existing files.

For the complete record-copy-reveal sequence, follow our reverse singing tutorial.

Try your voice in Safari first

Open the browser recorder directly in Safari, tap Record your voice, and allow the microphone. Stop recording, then compare the original and backwards playback. Recording stops automatically at 30 seconds.

The browser tool is for listening and practice. It processes audio on your device and clears it when you leave or reload. It does not export audio or transfer a browser take into SingBack. To save or share, make your recording in the app.

Listen to a short Voice Memo backwards

To preview an existing memo, first save it to Files. In Voice Memos, select the recording, open its additional actions and sharing options, then save it to Files. Apple's Voice Memos export instructions explain the process and the default M4A export.

In the web tool, tap Choose an audio file and locate the memo. Files must be 30 seconds or shorter and no larger than 10 MB. Shorten a longer memo before selecting it. This workflow lets you listen; it does not produce an exported reversed file.

M4A compatibility depends on your browser and the file's codec. If it cannot be read, try WAV or MP3. The native SingBack app records from the microphone and does not import Voice Memos.

Troubleshoot recording and playback

  • Microphone access is blocked: allow it in the app or browser's permissions, then try again.
  • You opened the site inside another app: open the link directly in Safari.
  • The file is too long: prepare a shorter excerpt before choosing it; the browser tool does not trim files.
  • Capture stops when you switch apps: keep the browser page visible while recording.

If you want to turn a new recording into a video, use Share Reverse in SingBack and follow our CapCut workflow.
